Veterinary bills are rising fast. In the UK, vet fees increased about 65% between 2016 and 2023. Similar trends are happening in the US and Canada. Many pet parents are shocked by the cost of exams, diagnostics, dental procedures, and emergency care.

A major reason? Corporate-owned veterinary clinics. In the UK, six large groups control around 60% of practices. In North America, corporate chains now own a large share of referral and general clinics. These groups track revenue per client, diagnostics, X-rays, and procedures. That can create pressure to increase testing and treatment costs.

In this video, Dr. Andrew Jones explains why vet costs are climbing, how corporate consolidation affects pricing, and what smart pet owners can do to protect themselves. Learn how to ask better questions before tests, request written estimates, and avoid surprise bills.

Knowledge lowers stress. Preparation lowers cost.

  1. I can afford a pet but can’t afford the vet bills. So I will never have another pet again. Pretty soon a pet will be a sign of wealth because only the rich will be able to afford them.

  2. Thank so much for the information I will make sure that the vet I go to is not run by a corporation. We moved so I due need a new vet I checked a few where we live now the old vet in md charge 125. To spay our dog one year later we moved to Florida and got a rescue golden went to neuter him the vet here wanted a thousand dollars. We found the spca they did it for 250. They where 4 months backed up they did it and when donated a extra hundred and was happy to do it

  3. I’m retired now and on a very fixed income. I know if something happens bad, I’ll have to choose euthanasia. Breaks my heart. All I can do is give them the best life I can, lots of love and pray nothing bad happens. I used to get all the yearly shots, etc., but not I’m trying to figure out if I can continue monthly heartworm medicine. My vet is privately owned, but still very expensive. But she is the best. I even worked for 9 years on weekends in the kennel for her along with my regular job just to help pay vet bills. Tomorrow I take one of my cats in due to what looks to me an infected tooth. I know they are going to push for vaccines which he hasn’t had in awhile. Praying it won’t be too expensive. I doubt I’ll have more pets after the ones I lose due to cost and my age. I pray I live long enough for their life span. But I also can’t imagine my home without a fur baby. I don’t have any family. They are my family.

  4. Natural diets and homeopathy have saved our pets. The regular vet is not super happy about it, obviously. But all my pups and cats have reached a very respectable age, comparable to 80 to 85 years old in human age, so I firmly believe it’s been worth it. And way cheaper too.
