Dental Care Products Explained for #petdentalmonth!

Most of us know we need to be caring for our pet’s teeth but it can be hard to pick out which products are the best and what to look for on the packaging.
So here are my tips!
Toothpaste
🦷 Always use a product that is ‘enzymatic’, this way it has an action again plaque and bacteria by itself and although actively brushing the teeth will always be the best option, just getting an enzymatic toothpaste onto the tooth surface and gums will help.
🦷 Always opt for a flavour our pets will enjoy! Anything ‘minty fresh’ is purely for our benefit, not theirs, and will just be masking the smells rather than doing something about their cause.
🦷 Never use human toothpastes with pets, they are not designed to be swallowed and are too harsh on their stomachs.
🦷 Pet toothbrushes are also helpful but I really like using a fingerbrush!
Mouthwashes
💦 These are like our mouthwashes in that they are anti-plaque and antibacterial but they are designed to go in water bowls or water fountains,
💦 They are not suitable for all pets because many prefer puddles to drink from (!), or don’t care for the taste but they are definitely worth a try!
Chews
🐕 Always opt for a proper dental chew with the VOHC or EVDS seal of approval
🐕 Some also contain the same ingredients as the toothpastes and mouthwashes, so in addition to the scraping effect of the chew, they have a direct impact on the plaque and bacteria build-up.
🐕 But for a decent impact, a chew should last at least 10-15 minutes, 2 bites and it’s gone is no good! So for powerful chewers you may need to try a few different ones or they may not be for them!
And don’t forget that for our cats we also have the option of teeth cleaning biscuits and there are plaque-softening powders that can be sprinkled on our pet’s food.
